Well, not so much a new blog as a new home. Tired of not being able to run any decent software because of hosting restrictions, I’ve decided it’s time to bite the bullet and move hosting providers. I’ve been extremely keen to avoid any significant work on web stuff because I have enough on my plate as it is, and can be a bit of a Web Luddite but sometimes you have to put in a little more effort for (hopefully) much better results.
The most important step of the move is probably this blog because a) It’s one of the most popular areas of the site; and b) It’s the most different. Everything else is just html, pdfs or docs, so it’s just a case of copying the files over.
Using serendipity gives me a few things I’m very keen on
- A template chooser for the reader, so you don’t have to put up with my bizarre web design choices
- The ability to subscribe to a blog so that you don’t need to check back for follow-up comments – the blogging software will notify you. I think this is one of the most important features for me.
- Oh, and it’s got Howard’s Calendar 😉
Of course there are bound to be one or two teething problems. The biggest at the moment is my inability to get Blogger to export a fairly large existing blog but it’s difficult to know whether that’s to do with Blogger’s problems this week (I picked a good time to get out, I reckon) or it’s just going to be a problem. I’m working on it, though.
In the meantime, I’m interested in both positive and negative comments about the new look and feel.
Nice. Really nice. I like the article subscription, the user templates and the syndication options. And yet another CMS to consider. Damn you 🙂
The best (accidental) move I made was to use Feedburner for my syndication. I only did it because Orablogs needed RSS and Blogger produced ATOM.
The benefit has been that, instead of having to notify people that my feed address has changed, I just updated my Feedburner account to point to the new blog. What a relief.
I’ll still need to take care of those who aren’t driving off Orablogs or Feedburner, but it makes things a bit easier.
Very nice indeed. In fact very, very nice. The template chooser is very nice indeed – much nicer than the Joomla one, by which I suppose your available templates are nicer than the Joomla ones.

Mmmm, thanks for the tip. I suppose the fact you don’t know the password acts as some defence, but it would be better if it didn’t show it.
Your blog somehow looks more “stately” now. All you need is Pete’s lilac suit, and….
Seriously, everything looks good on this end. Like the templates and the new look as a whole.

Yeah, I avoided that like the plague, but Blogger and Tripod were becoming too limiting.
Hopefully I can get the old posts across tonight and I’ll email a few people with the new address.
