Solaris 10 and Oracle 10g

Well that was an interesting if not too productive weekend.

I’d been keen to install Solaris 10 on the ISP4400, which went very well. These things are always time-consuming but I was interleaving it with normal human activity to make up for my recent mental absence from those around me. So it was a lift into town for my daughter, shopping with my other half (more on that later) and reading something other than computer books. I even managed to get some tidying up done around the house. I never thought that might be enjoyable …

Anyway, once Solaris was installed, patched up and looking-very-nice-thank-you, I thought I’d start delving into the new ZFS filesystem which looks very interesting indeed. Until I realised that it’s not included in the Solaris 10 download, but is included in something called Solaris Express (do Oracle and Sun use the same marketing consultants?). As I was downloading that, I thought I’d have a quick try of the Oracle installation. 10.2 isn’t available for Solaris on Intel yet, but there was 10.1 and that would do for now. Until I tried to install that and it isn’t supported on Solaris 10 🙁

It looks like I’ll have to wait for 10.2 to come out for Solaris on Intel which I expect will support Solaris 10.

All a bit of a shame but I want to get back to some more testing (not just PX, but some other things I’m talking to people about) so I thought I’d just stick Linux back on there. This time I went for Centos 4.2, just for a bit of a variety 😉 We’ll see how it goes.
