Parallel Execution and the Magic of 2
That’s my second presentation, at 2:15 today. I’ve thought long and hard about this one and hope I’ve made the right decision. I was concerned about how to encapsulate a 50+ page paper into a one hour slot. I hate presentations which are full of detail, rushed, badly thought-out and throw a ton of slides up so quickly that nobody walks away with any meaning.
So here’s what I’m going to talk about
- Why I decided to write about this subject and I’ll reference Cary’s paper briefly.
- What decisions I had to make early on in the process about the test environments.
- Talk a little about the test scripts and tools I used, but not walk through the scripts in detail.
- A few key results and where I think I made mistakes.
- Some initial thoughts on what the results mean.
- Suggestions for others who might try similar test exercises, based on my experience of this one.
- What I’d like to test next
I generally hate fluffy presentations that lack any technical content, but this is going to be very light on technical content because I think the paper is there for anyone to read and spend more than an hour over. I’m also conscious of the fact it’s the last afternoon and I want to try to make it bearable if I can.
So, that’s fair warning (are you listening, Eric – it’s going to be a presentation, not a course! 😉 ) and I’ll make it clear at the start of the presentation too so that people have time to hit the exits if it’s not for them.
Personally, I think the whole process makes an interesting story anyway, and a light presentation will add something to the paper and hopefully encourage people to try a similar exercise for themselves. I hope I’m right!

Excellent job on the presentation. I’m not just blowing smoke when I tell you that I added to my evaluation form that I hope they have more “Doug Burns” type presentations at the next meeting.
Fabulous job with the two presentations, Doug. I enjoyed both the level of technical content and the engaging way with which you presented the material.
And I second the notion of Eric presenting next year. He would no doubt have an interesting take on whatever topic he chose to present.

Ooops! Sorry, chaps, I just assumed they’d keep putting drinks on it with no signature. Well, I suppose I just didn’t really think about it …
What every David did seems to have done the trick, though. There’s a big number somewhere towards the end of that bill.

Thanks very much for the positive comments. I enjoyed giving the two presentations this week and felt pretty comfortable with how it went, but it’s difficult to know for sure if people were happy with them, so I appreciate it. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to do it again next year (although just the one presentation would be more fun, I think!)
