Aiiiyyyeeee!!!!

I’m concerned. There have been a couple of occasions since the start of the World Cup when a player has been tackled heavily (or hardly touched) and, in addition to flying several feet into the air, performing a double twist with pike and coming crashing to the ground in apparent agony, he has yelled out as if giving birth.

The results remind me of the crys of pain and imminent death in those old Commando comics

Player have always feigned injury but either this is a new development, the crowds at the World Cup can be very quiet at times or the pitchside microphones are far too sensitive.

In all the times I’ve played football (long ago), I’ve done many things when fouled, including getting up to attack my assailant, feeling sorry for myself or maybe just rolling around in pain for a bit. I don’t recall ever feeling like I wanted to scream.
Diving is bad enough, but I wish you could be yellow-carded for wailing like a baby.

  1. I guess we’re witnessing the dawn of the “multimedia rich” fake.

Still: as long as they don’t inflict on us the “instant action replay”, I’m all for increased entertainment in some of the games I’ve been watching!…

  2. That was always one turn-off of football/soccer. These are supposed to be big, tough, strong athletes, and yet they fall to the ground screaming at the slightest touch. Just makes them look like a bunch of sissies. Hockey players have started doing it too. When did all sports become like pro wrestling?

  3. “When did all sports become like pro wrestling?”

    … without the dramatic creativity!

“Hockey players have started doing it too.”

    Now that *is* worrying
