I&#8217;ll blog about that later, but I had to get this one out of the way before Scotland play France at football at five o&#8217;clock.<\/p>\n<p>This is from an interview with Walter Smith, Scotland&#8217;s manager, yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<i>As an English friend of mine said to me: &#8216;You are the only country in the world that can&#8217;t qualify for a tournament, but then, two months after the tournament is over, still think you can beat a team which reached the final.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re Scottish, so we&#8217;ve always got to be optimistic. We&#8217;re just a nation that is like that and I think it isn&#8217;t something to be criticised, it is something to be admired.<\/i>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>Truthfully? I know a fair bit about football and we don&#8217;t have a snowball in hell&#8217;s chance (mmm, &#8216;always got to be optimistic&#8217;?) although a fighting draw would be a brilliant result. Even a fighting defeat wouldn&#8217;t disappoint me too much. It&#8217;s just a welcome relief that Walter Smith has instilled some cause for fragile hope.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, &#8230;. &#128521;<\/p>\n<p>An English friend who was visting me in Edinburgh many years ago watched England defeat Scotland in the European Championships in the pub with me. (Well, me, him and the TV, not all the players.) When we went out that night, he commented that, if he hadn&#8217;t seen the match, he would have assumed that Scotland won based on the behaviour of the supporters that night.<\/p>\n<p>Good luck Scotland and, if we get cuffed?
