However, because he had a presentation of his own to do, he didn’t get a chance to attend so many presentations (try it for yourself some time, you’ll see what I mean). He’s also, in typically modest Peter style, completely neglected to mention his own presentation, which I want to hear about. So if Peter or someone else would like to let us know how it went, feel free. <\/span>Attended a presentation on PostgreSQL for Oracle DBAs. Yes really. Big <\/span>Canadian shop, running both products. Oracle for tp, PostgreSQL for data warehouse. Many similarities. But one thing stood out. Because Postie is open source, they were able to hack part of the code, to the extent that they can now access Postie and\/or Oracle data from within PostgreSQL totally and completely transparently. They hacked the PostgreSQL dblink, to make it work just like that in Oracle in a distributed environment, but accessing two products. Now move on to CA, who have just released a DBA tool, which is 100% browser based, and capable of running multi-db monitoring activities within the same application, whether on Windows, Linux or whatever.<\/p>\n

Note Oracle have just bought Berkeley. I see the walls coming down between the database products. What does that mean for a company like oracle? Is there significance in these buy-ups? And if Oracle does buy a Linux-clone, is it conceivable that such a system would ONLY support the Oracle dbms? I don’t think so – as I say, I think the walls may be starting to come down.
