Well, that’s the first day done. I arrived at about lunchtime and managed to attend a couple of the Oak Table presentations.<\/p>\n

The first was Anjo Kolk’s – ‘IO and SANS’. I’ve never had the pleasure of hearing Anjo present and I’m glad I made it. As well as hearing an engaging speaker, I managed to pick up something new which I didn’t make a note of! Essentially, there’s a method for resetting the maximum i\/o time recorded in v$filestat without restarting the instance, which is handy for monitoring. When I catch up with Anjo, I’ll make a note and add it to the blog. Unless of course, someone knows already and posts a comment. Someone commented that perhaps we could fill a room with SAN administrators, chained to their chairs, and have Anjo give the presentation again 😉<\/p>\n

Next was Graham Wood with a history of Oracle performance tuning features and approaches. This was really entertaining and in a similar vein to the Tales of the Oak Table book.<\/p>\n

I’ve volunteered to chair a few sessions this year and after a short meeting to discuss what’s involved, we adjourned for drinks courtesy of the UKOUG (Cheers!). I heard that next year’s conference will be a 5-day affair, probably to make space for the various user communities that the UKOUG serve now – Peoplesoft, JD Edwards and whoever else Oracle might buy. I wasn’t sure that this was official yet but then I noticed the dates for 2006 in the conference guide. I’m relieved, because I was concerned that a wider range of subjects would impact the number and standard of core technology presentations. I had a great time despite being a bit tired after the short trip to Birmingham. Let’s hope I’m in better shape for the blogger dinner<\/a> …<\/p>\n
