Not about Oracle

Well, it is and it isn’t.

First, I’m finally coming out of the minor delirium of the cold I’ve had and the latest match in the Ashes cricket series. I’m looking forward to a little normality for a few days although I’m still very tired.

Second, I hadn’t realised that Richie Benaud is due to retire from UK terrestrial TV next week. Even if you have occasional contact with cricket (like me), this man is classy. I was reading an article about him tonight and this section jumped out at me …

“For five days he will apply the principles behind his success.

  1. Fierce concentration.
  2. Engage brain before mouth.
  3. Say nothing unless you can add to the picture”

Let’s just say they’re principles I aspire to, rather than achieve, but might apply to Oracle commentary as well as cricket commentary.

No-one died here and nothing crumbled, but I’ll miss hearing Richie saying “Morning everyone”

Cheers,

Doug

  1. I read that as well. It was a good article I thought.

I was struck by “I’m a free-to-view man, always have been, always will be” (paraphrased). I disagree – I remember the terrible things terrestrial did to cricket coverage – even the saintly channel4 which I watched for an hour and a half once during which time 6 wickets fell – all sadly during the racing (live coverage available on satellite on film4 mind ). Never the less clearly a man of principle and immense knowledge.
