Karl Marx was a genial old duffer wandering around the British Library for most of his productive life. Hardly what I’d call a dictator!
And, unless I’m much mistaken, that’s his business partner and excellent capitalist Mr. Engels at his side. No dictator he, either.

I am more than happy to be corrected by you. I’m hopeless on history so quoted Peter’s email directly. I wouldn’t have called them dictators myself so should have used quotation marks.
I suppose I’m blaming Peter for everything. Which is convenient.

Cheek, the pair of you! Marx and Engels were undoubtedly dictators of the mind. Just look how many impressionable students (and others who ought to know better) are still under the sway of those ideas…. 🙂
Seriously though, their presence on the streets of Budapest and other cities in Hungary were explicitly part of the strategy to maintain the strength of the totalitarian state. No, I’m not going to debate the difference between a totalitarian state and a dictatorship… not much difference to Joe Public.
On the subject of dictatorships – sometimes it seems to me that it is leaning that way with our friends in New Labour nowadays. I’m thinking Howard really did make the right move by going south to escape the political climate of 80s Britain.
This is definitely a bear who belongs to Peter Robson. He is dressed in the same colors as Peter’s signature scarf.
