Statcounter Blocking Cookie

My website stats have shot up since making the case, decode and px papers accessible again using server side redirection from the old Tripod site. Spot the bit where the redirections were missing 😉

In fairness to Pete S, though, I should point out that the number of page hits is very high relative to the number of distinct visitors, because I have this kind of thing in my stats.

So there you go, Pete, you just need some multi-page documents 😉

What has been really annoying, though, is that those stats also include my own blog maintenance. Statcounter has a facility to set a blocking cookie so that my own access isn’t counted, but it kept disappearing. What I should have done, a couple of weeks ago, was go to the Statcounter forums and ask what was going on. 30 seconds after I eventually got round to it, this sticky forum posting showed just how common a problem this is so, for anyone else using Statcounter who might run into this problem, I thought I’d mention it here.

My short term solution has been to delete all cookies on my laptop (you wouldn’t believe the amount of junk that was in there anyway) to give the Statcounter cookies the best chance of working. I can update the code on my website later as this isn’t a big priority.

I’ll probably find my stats really plummet now 😉
