THE FINAL UPDATE – 21st August 2006
Template Issues? I don’t think so! More like user error 😉 It turns out that all of my template/RSS/blog problems were self-inflicted because I’d stupidly renamed my templates/default folder to something else. What I hadn’t realised was that, a bit like the DEFAULT profile in an Oracle database, the default template isn’t just the default template, but if files are (deliberately) missing from a template, Serendipity will also check the default directory to see if they’re there. It’s part of a search hierarchy, even when you’re using a different template.
Here’s the forum discussion relating to this. As usual, the *free* support was top notch, so thanks to Garvin and Carl.
The good news is that everything should be working fine now, so let me know if it isn’t.
I was quite pleased to be able to implement the andreas08 template on this blog and integrate it more successfully with the rest of the website. Although it works just fine with Firefox, however, there are a couple of problems.
- The comment submission form has disappeared.
- The emoticon graphics don’t display correctly in Internet Explorer.
I went back to the original template yesterday but I’ve decided to put andreas08 in place while I try to fix the problems.
Apologies if you want to leave a comment or are an IE user. I will either fix this or revert to the old template but I would also encourage you to use Firefox.
As a very small-time HTML developer, I have to say that IE drives me up the wall 😉
Updated later – 19th August 2006 – Nah, I give up for now.
That template was causing problems with my RSS feed too, so it’s going to be an unintegrated blog at the moment 🙁
(Yet another update.) I’ve decided to stick with this template for now to give people in the Serendipity Forums a chance to see if they have any idea what’s going wrong. For what it’s worth I’m not even sure it *is* the template that’s the problem.
Unfortunately, that means that comments are effectively disabled for now, but only for a day or two, and then I’ll put a working template back on. In the mean-time, if you have anything you want to say, email me at dougburns@yahoo.com and I’ll post your comment for you.

seems to work fine in Opera 9.
But that might be because I’ve put the old template back on for now. I’ll be tryign out the new template again when I get home (probably about 1900 GMT), so see how it goes after that.
Thanks,
Doug
Should be okay now. Let me know if you find any new problems.
Cheers,
Doug
Doug, thanks for taking us down this road, nothing we tried was a waste of time because ultimately we both learned a great deal about our favorite blog engine. Once again thanks for being patient with me as we worked toward a solution.
Carl
thanks for taking us down this road
It’s a good job at least one of us had a map 😉
