Book Reviews Again

Remember I said that I’d requested a copy of the Oracle Press ASM book
for review?

Well I don’t know what I was thinking, because the “Oracle Database 11g DBA Handbook” turned up instead the other week. I distinctly recall the ASM book being one of
the ones I was interested in, but then I also vaguely remember thinking ‘Mmmm,
that’ll be the 11g version of the book we used to give away on the Oracle 7 DBA
courses at Learning Tree. Maybe I should take a look at that. Besides, I don’t get much chance to use ASM, so how could I judge it?’.

But, yes, I’ve no idea what I was thinking
because the thought of reviewing it filled me with dread when it turned up in
the post. Fortunately, I had a terrific idea. We have a not-so-young trainee on
our team who is just getting into Oracle but is very bright and I don’t expect
it to take him long at all. I decided to give him the book. He can learn more
about Oracle and he can do my review for me too 😉 Seriously, I was concerned
that I might be overly-harsh on the book if it turned out to be too basic so
decided it might be a better idea to see what a new DBA thought of the book.
This guy is sharp, too, so I don’t think he’ll be easily dazzled.Another benefit is that I can send him a link to this and pile on the pressure! (Actually, he’s up to his eyeballs in books and new processes at the moment, so I wouldn’t expect a review any time soon. He’s also less of a loud-mouth than me so maybe there won’t be a review at all.)
