  1. Incredibly relevant blog. I just resigned from a company that insists on configuring its db servers based on cpu and memory “wow” factor, while I then have to cope with the crap IO capacity.

    And the one that is my pet peeve: the 8/16GB memory server with 32-bit processors. Like: what’s the point of >4GB in a 32-bit CPU?

    Yes, I know: the PAE rubbish. Spare me: it’s good old expanded memory, it will never perform adequatly.

    Why are db server purchase decisions being taken by folks who have NO CLUE what hardware is needed for dbs?
