At 5pm BST today, Germany kick off the 2006 World Cup Finals against Costa Rica. I’ll be a bit late for this first match because I have to finish work and stop off on the way home to pick my new TV up from a delivery depot. I tried to go for a balance between functionality and cost for what is, in light of Scotland’s smoking ban, an almost essential World Cup purchase. Better still, I’ve managed to convince my other half that I’ve bought it for her 😉 I’m expecting a few visitors over the next month or so.
In addition to putting up with Blogger’s technical problems this week, I’ve organised the World Cup Sweepstake at work. £5 per entry, with the following prizes :-
1st – £80
2nd – £40
3rd – £20
4th – £10
Last – £10
The last of those prizes was fairly essential for everyone to feel involved for the first week or two.
I am sure I will delight some of those who know me when I inform you that I selected Iran and England.
Is it worth £80 for me to see England win the World Cup? Not a chance! Then again, if they were to be defeated by a last minute goal in the final, I’d be able to buy the next round in the pub and still have enough for a celebratory bottle of champagne for the house.
Far more likely is that England trickle out somewhere in the last 16 or last 8. Because Paraguay and Sweden are rubbish, you know. England are *bound* to beat them 😉
Hi Doug,
Nice new site… indeed World Cup Fever!
On your site, the url for blog is still to your old blog, I suppose you’ll post from now on, to this blog?
Best Regards,
Dimitri
Dimitri,
Yes, I will be posting here from now on, but there’s going to be a bit of a transition period while I sort everything out, including copying old blogs over hopefully and sorting out the rest of the site too.
By the way, the more I use and see your Apex World Cup site, the more impressed I am. It’s excellent work and much appreciated 😉 Thanks!
Cheers,
Doug
Doug,
I was kind of hoping you would write your own blog software in APEX 😉
I know a good place to host it 😉
Mmmm, yeah, but …
a) I’m not enough of a geek
b) I’m up to my eyeballs in RSS feeds 😉
c) That apex link is *still* sitting in my Inbox. Perhaps it will be used one day, but Dimtri’s World Cup competition has set the bar pretty high
