I noticed that Tom Kyte’s Hotsos Photos are available on flickr. I was going to blame him for making me look even scarier than normal but then I remembered thinking I would make a funny face because I’m not that keen on having my photo taken. Mission accomplished, I’d say! There’s some pretty good photos… Continue reading Tom Kyte’s Hotsos Photos

PX and “the Magic of 2”
Now that I’ve had time to sit back and relax and absorb things a little, I thought I should fix a couple of outright bugs in the recent PX paper (Later update – link to the paper) and revisit the conclusions before moving on to testing different aspects. First, the bugs :- I’ve changed processes… Continue reading PX and “the Magic of 2”
Benchmarking
I haven’t been keeping up with asktom lately but I noticed this one when I had a glance today and enjoyed it. Take a look at the last follow-up, dated 14th March 2006, and Tom’s answer. Very true and very appropriate to my recent work. Perhaps the questioner should take the number 1.53215 and display… Continue reading Benchmarking
Free Hotsos Materials Link Here!
Sorry to disappoint you, but there isn’t one. Having received two emails in 24 hours asking me for copies of presentations, I thought I should make my position clear here. If anyone wants a copy of my Hotsos presentations or papers, you only have to ask and I’ll be happy to supply them – the… Continue reading Free Hotsos Materials Link Here!
Lucky Escape
When I left for the US, Edinburgh was covered in snow. It returned yesterday to the extent that Edinburgh airport was closed for a while. The Continental flight in from New York was diverted to Belfast. Now that would have been fun 🙁
Hotsos 2006 Photos
Many thanks to David Kurtz for taking photos of a much higher quality than mine and putting them on Flickr. There are some funny photos there, including a couple of Moans Nogood helping me to distribute free beer but, judging by later photos, he appears to have consumed it all himself 😉 (Please, please don’t… Continue reading Hotsos 2006 Photos
Home Sweet Home
I think I’ve been missed. Once The Dog was liberated from my case, they wanted to meet the new addition – Bobby (as in Ewing) – a White bear from the Lone Star State (bottom right of the picture). Bill is also unusually happy about his Hotsos cap (or perhaps being informed that one of… Continue reading Home Sweet Home
Hotsos – Day 3 – Wrap-up
Sorry I didn’t blog much yesterday but I ended up having some things to take care of in the morning that I wasn’t expecting, both presentation-related and not. In the end, I didn’t manage to attend very much. I feel I’ve let everyone down 😉 One of my friends sent me an SMS to ask… Continue reading Hotsos – Day 3 – Wrap-up
Hotsos – Day 2.5
In the afternoon yesterday there was a schedule change and so I attended Karen Morton’s ‘When the Truth is not Persuasive’. This was about personality types and communications skills which is a subject I’m always interested in and I thought she was a very engaging speaker. I couldn’t work out which personality type I was… Continue reading Hotsos – Day 2.5
How Many Slaves?
Parallel Execution and the Magic of 2 That’s my second presentation, at 2:15 today. I’ve thought long and hard about this one and hope I’ve made the right decision. I was concerned about how to encapsulate a 50+ page paper into a one hour slot. I hate presentations which are full of detail, rushed, badly… Continue reading How Many Slaves?
