I noticed a comment on Tom Kyte’s blog from Gabe with a solution to the spam comments that keep appearing against blog entries. It means you’ll need to go through a word verification process when posting a comment, which is a bit of a pain, but hopefully it will stop the spam. Let me know if you think this is unneccessary or unwieldy.

It’s a pain, isn’t it? I just deleted those that appeared, but then it might look like censorship, as opposed to getting rid of advertising nonsense.
Do they really think someone’s going to fall for it? (Probably best not to think of answering that …) Then again, perhaps there is some Viagra in my future?

I’ve only had a few so far, so I can manage. If it gets to that point, though, you can bet I’ll be turning word verification on.
We get thousands of attempted comment spams every month on blogs hosted on orablogs.com. It’s really quite irritating 🙂 The version of MT we’re using doesn’t have good support for identity verification as well, so we have to rely on blacklists. But it’s a bit of a constant job maintaining this…
The irony is that, these days, most blogging software actually circumvents the reason blog spammers post spam in the first place. The original goal of blog comment spammers was to increase their google page rank by creating lots of incoming links to their sites. Now, most blogs generate links in a way that tells indexing software like google not to count the link toward the page rank of the link target. Despite this, the spam keeps on flying 🙂
